I've been shooting with action cameras for a few years now — GoPro, DJI Osmo Action, Insta360. They're all great out of the box, but the accessories are what really determine how much you get out of them. Some are essential, some are gimmicks. Here's what I've found actually worth having.
A Proper Storage Bag
Action cameras are small, which means they're easy to lose or damage in a bag full of other stuff. A dedicated storage bag keeps everything organized — camera, batteries, cables, mounts — in one place. I use a compact organizer bag for day trips and a larger PU storage bag when I'm bringing a full kit. The difference in how quickly I can set up and pack down is noticeable.
Quick-Release Mounts
This is the one I'd recommend to anyone who shoots action content. A magnetic quick-release mount lets you switch between setups in seconds — helmet to chest to handlebar — without unscrewing anything. Once you've used one, going back to standard screw mounts feels painfully slow.
I use an aluminum alloy rotating quick-release mount that works across multiple DJI Osmo Action models. The magnetic connection is strong enough that I've never had it come loose, even on rough terrain.
Multi-Slot Charging Base
Battery life is the main limitation of any action camera. A 3-slot charging base means I can charge three batteries at once overnight and head out in the morning with a full set. It's a simple thing, but it completely changed how I plan shoots. No more rationing battery or cutting sessions short.
Magnetic Gimbal Base Adapter
If you use your action camera on a gimbal or want to mount it to a cold shoe, a magnetic gimbal base adapter is the cleanest solution I've found. It works with GoPro and Insta360 GO 3, attaches securely, and makes the whole setup feel more intentional rather than cobbled together.
Extended Selfie Stick
For Insta360 users especially, a long selfie stick is almost mandatory. The invisible selfie stick effect only works properly when the stick is long enough to stay out of the 360° frame. I use a 1.2m stick for most situations — it's long enough to get creative angles without being unwieldy.
Handheld Shooting Grip
A dedicated shooting grip with a fixed handle makes handheld footage significantly more stable and comfortable, especially on longer shoots. I use one with a cold shoe mount on top so I can attach a small light or mic when needed. It's not glamorous, but it's one of those things I reach for almost every time I shoot.
Locking Hand Screws
Last one, and it sounds boring — but a set of good aluminum alloy locking screws has saved me from loose mounts more times than I can count. The standard plastic screws that come with most mounts wear out faster than you'd expect. Metal replacements are cheap and last much longer.
Where to Start
If you're just building out your action camera kit, start with a storage bag and a multi-slot charger. Those two things solve the most common frustrations — disorganized gear and running out of battery. Add a quick-release mount next, and go from there based on how you shoot.
The camera is just the beginning. The right accessories are what let you actually use it the way you want to.
