Wired selfie sticks are simple and don't need charging, but they only work with specific phone jacks and can feel clunky. Bluetooth remotes are way more convenient — you can trigger the shutter from a distance, which opens up a lot more shot possibilities.
The one thing I'd say: make sure the Bluetooth remote is actually reliable. I had one that would disconnect constantly, which got old fast. Read reviews on this specifically before buying.
Tripod Combo = Game Changer
This was the upgrade that actually changed how I shoot. A selfie stick that converts into a mini tripod means I can set it up on a surface, step back, and get shots that look nothing like a selfie. Group photos, time-lapses, video — all suddenly possible without needing another person.
I use mine almost every day now. If I had to pick just one thing to recommend, it's this: get a stick with a built-in tripod base.
Build Quality Is Worth Paying For
I bought a cheap one once. The locking mechanism broke after two trips. Now I look for aluminum alloy construction and a solid twist-lock or flip-lock system. It doesn't have to be expensive, but it should feel sturdy when extended — especially if you're mounting an action camera or anything heavier than a phone.
Check Compatibility Before You Buy
Most selfie sticks work with phones, but if you're using an action camera like a GoPro or DJI Osmo, make sure the mount is compatible. Some sticks come with universal adapters, which is ideal. Others are phone-only and won't work with anything else.
My Current Setup
Right now I use a mid-length aluminum stick with a Bluetooth remote and a foldable tripod base. It handles my phone and my action camera equally well, fits in my day bag, and has never let me down on a trip. Nothing fancy — just reliable.
If you're just getting started, don't overthink it. Get something with a tripod base, a Bluetooth remote, and decent build quality. That covers 90% of what most people actually need.
